Dark Horse Picks to Win PGA 2023 WGC Match Play on FanDuel Sportsbook

Updated:

The odds are posted for the 64-player field in the WGC Match Play at Austin Country Club in Texas. The group format includes head-to-head rounds Wed-Friday between four players in each group (16) with the winners advancing. All of the world's top golfers are in the field minus Justin Thomas and Justin Rose.

The 7,182-yard par 71 at Austin CC is a Pete Dye design with plenty of risk/reward holes. Last year, eight of the top 16 players and group anchors advanced to the knockout stage -- the most since 2016.

Following wins by dark horse picks Max Homa in the Farmers Insurance Open and Adam Svensson in the RSM Classic, along with a near miss / top-5 finish by Tommy Fleetwood (T-3) at the Valspar Championship, there are opportunities to cash in on other players behind the leading favorites.

WGC Match Play Dark Horse Picks 2023

Beyond the favorites, there are plenty of capable longshots and dark horses that could make a run at the leaderboard and come away with a higher finish or victory at the WGC Match Play event. After all, did you see Kurt Kitayama win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at 220/1 odds or greater? Match play differs greatly from stroke play, but there have been plenty of longshots advance to the weekend in the WGC event.

Check out the WGC Match Play odds to win on FanDuel Sportsbook along with the groups and matchups before play begins on Wednesday.

1. Xander Schauffele (+2200)

Schauffele looks like a good bet to get through Group 6 with Tom Hoge the likely top challenger. That could set up a knockout stage match with Matt Fitzpatrick. But we'll include Schauffele, whose stats remain pretty solid after a blistering run on the tour last year with multiple wins and additional top-5 finishes. He's played well enough here without making a deep run and is clearly a top player who sits behind seven others on the odds board.

2. Matt Fitzpatrick (+3400)

Fitzpatrick's Short Game and Around the Green stats are strong, ranking top 15 in this field over his last 50 rounds. With additional solid play Tee-to-Green, Off-the-Tee and Putting, the 2022 U.S. Open champion ranks No. 7 overall in SG: Total. Fitzpatrick has had success on other Pete Dye designs, and he also beat Poulter and Fleetwood in this WGC event last year before losing a sudden-death playoff to the eventual champion, Scheffler. With three first-time players in his group, he's a good bet to get out of the round-robin format and move on with a chance to go deeper.

3. Corey Connors (+4200)

Canadian Corey Connors has been dialed in with his Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking and Approach play, but unfortunately the 31-year-old's short game and putting have let him down this year. Connors has played in this WGC Match Play event twice, however, and last year he made a deep run to finish third after beating Dustin Johnson. Connors is in the third tier of his group, but he's the most consistent and can advance before a potential run like last year.
