Olufifun Adeleke

American Roulette is one of the most famous table games in the world. It is also popular in the Caribbean, North, and South America. It is one of the two main variants of roulette with the other one being the European Roulette. One major difference between both variants is American Roulette's higher house edge.

It is played in physical casinos, online casinos, and live online casinos in different variations. American Roulette might look like a tough game, but we will show you how easy it is to play in this review.

How to play American Roulette

The American Roulette wheel has 38 colored divisions (numbered pockets), with numbers 1 to 36,0 and 00. Divisions 1 to 36 are colored red and black alternately and division 0 and 00 are green. The goal of the game is for the player to place a bet on a number he/she expects the ball in the wheel to land on. The 38 numbers are equally arranged so every player has an equal chance of winning.

For novices who have no prior knowledge of American Roulette, it's advisable to take advantage of the free demo provided by online casinos before spending any money on bets.

Here's how the flow goes when playing American Roulette:

  • American Roulette starts with a player making a bet.
  • The dealer spins the wheel.
  • While the roulette wheel is in motion, the dealer throws a ball into the wheel. Players can still make bets at this point.
  • The dealer informs the players to stop betting at some point during the wheel spin.
  • When the roulette wheel stops, the ball ends up on a specific number, whoever bet that number wins.

Roulette Bets

Unlike other table games, American roulette uses a different kind of chips. Before the games start, players exchange cash or the typical casino chips for the American roulette chips. Players are given chips in different colors to avoid confusion when they are ready to cash out. Players can begin to place bets after obtaining chips. They make their bets at the American roulette table where the different betting categories are listed.

A player can put his/her chips on one bet or a combination of bets. But in online American roulette, the player is in control of the game, the roulette simulator functions according to players' requests.

The betting section is divided into two, the individual numbers and the group bets. These bets are divided into inside bets and outside bets.

Inside bets

Outside bets

Outside bets include a larger amount of numbers. They cover a huge part of the roulette wheel and have lower payouts.

  • Column bets: The bet involves a column of 12 numbers, it is placed on the "2-1" box at the end of the column. Its payout ratio is 2 to 1.
  • Dozen bets: It involves a group of 12 numbers and the bet is placed on the 1-12 box, the 13 to 24 box, and the 25 to 36 box. Its payout ratio is 2 to 1.
  • Odd/even: This bet involves either all even numbers or all odd numbers and is placed on the "even box" and the "odd box" respectively. The payout ratio is 1 to 1.
  • Red/black: This bet involves either all the red colors or all the black colors in a layout and is placed on the "red box" and "black box" respectively. The payout ratio is 1 to 1.
  • 1-18/19-36: 1- 18 are low numbers and 19- 36 are high numbers, the bet is placed in the "low box" and on the "high box" respectively. The payout ratio is 1 to 1.
