The Broncos Should Steal This Upcoming Free Agent Away From the Chiefs After the 2020 Season

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the class of the AFC West recently, but the young Denver Broncos are looking to make some waves of their own. It's an uphill battle to catch the Super Bowl champs, of course, but a few key offseason moves could help close the gap.

One that would make a ton of sense in the 2021 offseason would be stealing away Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones.

The Chiefs have said they'd like to get a long-term contract done with Jones, but considering they've had to resort to using the franchise tag to lock him up for the 2020 season, it's far from a guarantee that they'll reach an agreement. The Broncos are projected to have more cap space than the Chiefs next offseason, so if Jones hits the open market they may be able to offer a more appealing deal.

The Broncos are loaded with interior defensive linemen right now, but both Mike Purcell and Shelby Harris will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the season. Instead of extending either of them, John Elway could look to bring in Jones to play alongside Jurrell Casey.

Jones ranked seventh among all interior d-linemen in Pro Football Focus' overall grades in 2019 (87.6). He's no stranger to playing at such a high level, having received an 89.6 in 2017 and 90.4 in 2018.

Stealing Jones from the Chiefs would not only shore up an upcoming need for the Broncos, but it would also really ding the Chiefs' defensive line. That's a win-win for Denver.
