The Miami Dolphins are scheduled to play their preseason finale on the road this Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. While a lot of teams have waited until their final preseason game to look at their starters in action, it'll be the opposite for Miami.

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores told reporters on Thursday that sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa would not be playing in the preseason finale. Flores also went on to add that most of the team's starters would have the day off Sunday as the regular season looms.

Each of the 32 NFL teams needs to have its 53-man roster finalized by Tuesday, August 31. Considering how most of the Dolphins starters have their roster spot locked up, it makes sense that Flores wouldn't want to risk unnecessary injury in the final preseason game. If anything, the exhibition matchup is for fringe players who have one final shot at making an NFL team this year.

After three sub-.500 records in four seasons, the Dolphins shocked a lot of people last year by going 10-6. While they just missed out on the playoffs, that sort of performance grabbed a lot of people's attention. While Miami's offense wasn't anything special in 2020, it boasted a Top-5 defense in the NFL, allowing just 21.1 points per game (4th). Now that Tagovailoa has had a year to improve and the team has brought in better pass-catching talent to surround him with, expect the Dolphins to continue last campaign's momentum into the new season.

Even after their success in 2020, the Dolphins still have their doubters in 2021. FanDuel Sportsbook is currently projecting Miami to miss this year's playoffs at -144 odds.
