Breece Hall Fantasy Football Outlook 2022 (Temper Expectations for the Rookie RB)

Breece Hall Fantasy Football Outlook 2022 (Temper Expectations for the Rookie RB)

Updated:

Every new NFL season brings a new crop of rookies with some bringing more hype than others — especially as far as fantasy football is concerned. Running back Breece Hall is one of the latest first-year studs to join the trend after the New York Jets drafted him 36th overall back in April.

A rookie's fantasy performance is always tough to predict due to a lack of NFL experience. Even though Hall is slated to be the Jets' starting rusher, there's some valid concern about whether he can be an effective fantasy performer this fall.

Breece Hall Fantasy Football Outlook

Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 217lbs, Hall proved that he could be a three-down rusher over his last two seasons at Iowa State. He suited up in 24 games for the Cyclones over that stretch, turning 532 carries into 3,044 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns while also hauling in 59 balls for 482 yards and another trio of TDs.

Even though the Jets finished 25th in the NFL with 98.1 rushing yards per game in 2021, the 157 yards on the ground that they averaged over their final three contests was third-best over that span. That's the type of energy they need to bring for Hall to be successful.

The Jets improved their offense over the offseason, which includes fortifying their offensive line with guard Laken Tomlinson. Assuming that the unit plays as well as it looks on paper, New York could have a top-10 o-line on its hands and Hall would benefit from that.

There is a downside to Hall's fantasy outlook, though. The Jets own the eighth-hardest 2022 schedule, according to ESPN's Mike Clay, which could lead to negative game scripts impacting the rookie's rushing opportunities if the team is constantly trailing.

Breece Hall Projections

Projections from the NFL odds on FanDuel Sportsbook aren't anything special as far as Hall is concerned. He's listed at +4000 to finish his first season as the league's rushing yards leader, placing him in a six-way tie for the 20th-best odds. He's also available at +6000 (T-No. 35) to be the 2022 NFL rushing TD leader.

As far as individual props are concerned, FanDuel hasn't published Hall's projected rushing yards total. However, he does own the second-best odds (+900) to be named the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Is Breece Hall a Good Fantasy Football Pick?

Hall has the potential to be something special one day, but don't expect that to happen immediately. The Jets are still going through growing pains and Hall has a lot to learn about how to be successful in the lead. After all, rookie RBs aren't always the most consistent fantasy performers.

For now, Fantasy Pros ranks Hall as the RB21 in PPR formats heading into the 2022 campaign. He carries an average draft position of 43.6, meaning he'll likely be off the board before the end of the fourth round in 12-team leagues.

It's smart to draft a clear-cut starter and while Hall holds that title at the moment, it's tough to trust Jets players in fantasy. The potential for a solid year is there, but I'd recommend drafting an RB or two before considering Hall this year.
