The Atlanta Braves are in a unique situation. Unlike many other teams around baseball, Atlanta enters the MLB offseason with one simple clear-cut priority. That is re-signing Dansby Swanson.
Several other Braves hit the open free agent market, but none are as important or provide the offensive punch the longtime Braves shortstop does. But, as with any star free agent, Atlanta must also consider a contingency plan should Swanson sign elsewhere.
One Braves coach, Ron Washington, already made his pitch for a potential Swanson replacement.
It's not one of the other big-name free agent shortstops like Carlos Correa or Trea Turner. Rather, Washington is highly confident with an in-house option Vaughn Grissom.
Washington is a New Orleans, LA native and calls the city home during the offseason. He's currently back in NOLA and working intensely with Grissmon, "prepping the youngster to take over for Swanson if needed" per The Athletic's David O'Brien.
It's not that Washington is advocating the franchise lets Swanson join another team, but he wants to be prepared if that happens. “I don’t think Dansby is replaceable unless they go get a superstar," said Washington. "[Grissom] is getting better and better every day. He’s here in New Orleans right now, and I’m telling you, he’s improving big-time.”
