49ers Sign Former XFL Star Amidst Running Back Injury Concerns
The San Francisco 49ers injury troubles have leaked into the 2021 campaign with the running back depth chart being hit the hardest. Five different running backs on the 49ers roster have now made an appearance on the injury report, in one way or another, including the trio of Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon following Sunday's Week 2 victory.
In addition to trying out multiple veteran free-agent backs, the 49ers signed former XFL star Jacques Patrick off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad.
San Francisco 49ers News
Patrick made a strong case to find a home on NFL rosters after his 2021 preseason with the Bengals. The former Florida State Seminole rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown (5.0 yards per carry), while catching 3 passes for 23 yards.
He previously spent four strong years at Florida State (1,790 yards and 17 TDs) and went undrafted in 2019 before opting to play in the XFL. During his time with the XFL's Tampa Bay Vipers, Patrick rushed for 254 yards and 2 TDs on just 60 carries.
San Francisco's running back depth has been devastated so far this season, but the hope is this marks a low point in the season and the team can only go up from there. After all, the 49ers are one of seven undefeated NFL teams and head into Week 3 as 3.5-point favorites over the Green Bay Packers on FanDuel Sportsbook.
