Wells Fargo Championship Field

Another Designated Event and $20 million purse has a strong field assembled at Quail Hollow. A total of 21 of the top 30 in the Official World Golf Rankings are playing. Notably missing are No. 1 Jon Rahm and No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, along with injured No. 9 Will Zalatoris and No. 21 Hideki Matsuyama.

Golfers are tested in total driving, long iron approaches, and the ability to consistently scramble for pars on Poa greens with Bermuda base turf. The event has been held at Quail Hollow four times since 2016. Current world No. 7 Max Homa won last year when it was held at TPC Potomac in Maryland, but Homa (-15) also won at Quail Hollow in 2019. Rory McIlroy is No. 3 in the world and has also won the event here three times. Most recently at Quail Hollow in 2021 at -10 under par.

World No. 10 Jordan Spieth plays in the event for the first time since 2013, but he was 5-0-0 at the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow last September. No. 14 Collin Morikawa makes his tournament debut. No. 15 Justin Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. The 2023 RBC Heritage dark horse winner Matt Fitzpatrick tied for 2nd in the event last year in his debut. Tony Finau is playing this week and is up to No. 11 in the world after winning last week's Mexico Open. Jason Day won the 2018 event at Quail Hollow, and he's up to No. 34 in the world after starting the year at No. 112.

Wells Fargo Championship Picks & Predictions

McIlroy's three wins in the event and field-leading driving distance make him a major threat to bounce back off his cut at The Masters. But his low odds are not attractive. Rory has finished outside the top-10 just twice in 11 starts in the Wells Fargo Championship.

Jason Day had six-straight top-10 finishes until The Masters (T39). The 35-year-old Australian fits many of the stat profiles to contend again here. The 2018 winner at Quail Hollow is top-6 in strokes gained Total over his last 50 rounds behind McIlroy, Finau, world No. 4 Patrick Cantlay, Homa and No. 5 Xander Schauffele - who are all playing this week.

Day ranks highly in this field in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green, Scrambling, Bogey Avoidance, and Total in difficult scoring conditions. Eight par 4's play to at least 450 yards and Day ranks top-10 in scoring from 450+ yards. Day's short game is exceptional, and he's one of the best putters on Poa. While 12 golfers have lower odds to win, Day is a top win contender this week in Charlotte.

Pick: Jason Day to Win (+2800) and/or Finish Top 10
