Charles Schwab Field and Course

The invitational field at the Charles Schwab is limited to 120 players and includes eight of the top 20 players in the world rankings - Scottie Scheffler. Viktor Hovland, Max Homa, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau, Sam Burns, Collin Morikawa, and Sungjae Im.

There are upwards of 12 golfers with Texas ties in the tournament led by former Texas Longhorns and Dallas residents Scheffler and Spieth.

The par 70 tree-line course plays to 7,209 yards and has Bermuda grass fairways and rough with smaller than Tour average bentgrass greens.

Charles Schwab Picks & Predictions

Scheffler and Spieth dominate the odds board at the top. Clearly their success in the event is notable with Spieth winning in 2016, runner-up three times and eight total top-10's in the event at Colonial including four in a row. Scheffer lost in a playoff last year to Sam Burns and shot 72 on Sunday to lose his two shot lead. He also missed the cut in 2021 and finished T-55 on debut in 2020.

Spieth, Finau, Morikawa, and Harris English top the field in total strokes gained at Colonial CC. Spieth and Finau have been most dominant and top-two as well at Colonial in Tee-to-Green, Ball Striking, and Off-The-Tee, and Spieth is also No. 1 in Putting and Around-the-Green stats. Of course, Spieth has an issue with his wrist that he played through last week at the PGA Championship wearing tape on his left wrist and KT tape on his forearm. So play him at your own risk, along with Scheffler at ridiculously low odds.

Shot-making and accuracy are keys on the tree-line positional course, along with a strong week of putting. Two of the last three events at Colonial have ended in a playoff, and last year's score of 271 (-9) tied for the lowest winning score since 2000.

A top-10 finish in the event is a precursor to success. The top players with a top-10 finish in the tournament over the last three years include Spieth, Scheffler, Finau, Morikawa, Burns, Im, and Justin Rose. Those are your top-ranked contenders with Im having the longest odds of those 28/1 or less. Sungjae Im joins Spieth, Finau, and Morikawa as those players at the top with multiple top-15 finishes at Colonial.

Sungjae Im is also top-10 in the field in Good Drives Gained, which is more predictive of success at Colonial CC than pure accuracy. He tops the leaders in Par 4 efficiency from 450-500 yards and if his putter is on like it was at the Wells Fargo Championship (+5.6) when he finished top 10, then Im can make a run at the Royal Tartan Plaid jacket given to the winner - along with a restored 1973 Ford Bronco.

Pick: Sungjae Im to Win (+2200) and/or Finish Top 10 (+240)
