KENTUCKY DERBY BETTING 101

There are many ways to bet on the Kentucky Derby. The most simple bets are called straight wagers: win, place, or show. A win bet is when your horse finishes first. A place bet means your horse finishes in the top two, and a show bet is when your horse comes in the top three. These bets have a $2 minimum.

There are also more complex bets called exotic wagers. These involve predicting the order of multiple horses (vertical wagers) or the winners of several races (horizontal wagers). Vertical wagers include exacta, trifecta, superfecta, and Super High Five, where you predict the first two, three, four, or five horses in order, respectively. The minimum bets are $2 for exacta (with $1 for additional combinations), $0.50 for trifecta, and $1 for both superfecta and Super High Five.

Horizontal wagers involve betting on multiple races, such as the Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6. The minimum bets are $1 for Daily Double, $0.50 for Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5, and $0.20 per combination for Pick 6.

KENTUCKY DERBY ODDS

One of the core questions when you are betting is whether you are getting the right odds to play your horse. Odds in the Kentucky Derby work the same way as with other horse races in the United States: they are pari-mutuel odds. This means that the odds are based on how the public is wagering. If bettors on the whole put more money on a horse, the horse is a favorite and the odds are lower. If bettors put less money on a horse, that horse is a long shot, and the odds will be higher.

When the Kentucky Derby is drawn, Churchill Downs will release a morning line. That morning line will be an educated estimate of what the odds will be on race day, though it will not be a guarantee of odds. Betting on the Kentucky Derby opens at 9:00 a.m. EDT on the day before the Kentucky Derby. Through that Friday and Saturday, bettors can watch the odds fluctuate based on the wagers coming in before the race. Final odds are determined by how much has been bet on each horse once the gates fling open.

DERBY PREP RACES/RESULTS

Churchill Downs runs a series of races called the Road to the Kentucky Derby; these races offer points, and priority for entering the Kentucky Derby is determined by how many points each horse earns. As of 2024, the top five horses in each race earn points toward the Kentucky Derby; from 2013 through 2022, points only went to the top four horses, but it was expanded.

Prep races begin in September with the Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs and run until April. In general, prep races nearest in time to the Run for the Roses are worth more points, with final preps like the Florida Derby (G1), Blue Grass (G1), Santa Anita Derby (G1), and Arkansas Derby (G1) offering enough points that their winners and even second-place finishers are practically guaranteed a spot in the starting gate. If a tie in points standings occurs, the horse with higher non-restricted stakes earnings gets priority.

There are also two other Kentucky Derby qualification systems for horses based abroad. The European Road to the Kentucky Derby and the Japanese Road to the Kentucky Derby each offer one spot in the starting gate, available to the top point-earner who wants to go. No horse from either series of preps has run in the Kentucky Derby, though European points-earner Gronkowski finished second in the 2018 Belmont, and Japanese runner Epicharis entered the 2017 Belmont before scratching.

How many horses are in the Kentucky Derby?

Four horses can also enter on the also-eligible list, and they will be allowed to run if a horse scratches from the main field before betting opens on Friday morning, the day before the race. Don't count out the also-eligible horses: Rich Strike drew in from there and went on to win the 2022 Kentucky Derby!

I won my sports bet or horse racing bet. Where are my winnings?

Horse racing is one of the most exciting and unique sports in betting, from the Kentucky Derby, to the Belmont Stakes, and beyond.

But it can also be a bit complicated sometimes.

FanDuel and all other sports betting providers rely on official statistics and results from the leagues like the NFL or NBA. Horse racing is a little different depending on race course tracks and governing bodies, and it can include post-race inspection, video replay, and much more.

Because of this, it can take a little longer for any winnings to end up in your account following a race compared to other sports. This is called "bet settlement."

We must wait on any official results in case there are no disqualifications or issues with the confirmed outcome of the race.

What kind of bets can I make in the Derby?

You can make the same kinds of bets on the Kentucky Derby that you can on any horse race: straight bets (win, place, show), exotic bets (exacta, trifecta, superfecta, Super High Five), and pick wagers (Daily Double, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6). In addition, Churchill Downs often offers special wagers that cover the Kentucky Derby, such as a Daily Double between the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.

How do I understand the odds?

Betting on horse races is pari-mutuel: this means the odds are based on how people are betting. If more money is bet on a horse, the price will be shorter; if little money is bet on a horse, then the odds will be higher. Note also that odds on American races like the Kentucky Derby are phrased in terms of the multiple of profit you will get over the money you originally bet. For example, if a horse wins the Kentucky Derby at 5-1 odds, that means the horse will pay $12 to win: $10 worth of winnings, plus your original $2 stake.

Who won the Kentucky Derby in 2022?

Rich Strike won the 2022 Kentucky Derby for trainer Eric Reed, jockey Sonny Leon, and owner RED TR-Racing (Rick Dawson). An 80-1 long shot, he drew in off the also-eligible list when Ethereal Road scratched Friday morning, and rolled home late to win!
