Earlier this week, Steelers running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount were both arrested for possession of marijuana after getting pulled over by a police officer in Ross Township, Pa.
Since Bell — Pittsburgh’s starting RB — was behind the wheel, he’s facing a DUI charge.
Makes sense, doesn’t it? Not so much to Bell.
Yes, most cases of DUI involve alcohol, but come on, man. If that kind of charge was just for drinking too much, it would be called a DUA, or something like that.
Despite this arrest and distraction to the team, both RBs played Thursday night in Pittsburgh’s third preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, combining to rush for 55 yards on 16 carries. There hasn’t been any indication on what league discipline will be, but one would assume either a fine or (more likely) a suspension is on its way once the case is closed.
Unfortunately for Bell, his ignorance of the law won’t get him out of this DUI charge, but he did give us all a laugh in the process.
The Steelers plan on using both of their RBs a lot throughout this season as a two-headed running attack. Bell rushed 244 times for 860 yards and eight touchdowns last season, while Blount was a pleasant surprise for the New England Patriots, running for 772 yards on 153 carries and seven scores.
During the start of training camp, it was perceived that Bell would get the majority of the carries, but the coaching staff revealed they’ll both be used heavily, severely handcuffing each player’s fantasy football value.
