2014 DFBC Finalist: Fantasy Baseball Over Roulette for Mattness

August 7 10:20am

Once upon a time, finalist mattness would have bet a hundred grand of his DFBC winnings on black without a second thought. Now, with a newborn baby to look after (and more in the works), he’s looking for a strong cash in Vegas to help set up his family’s future.

How long have you been playing fantasy sports/baseball?

I started playing fantasy football in 1997 and started playing fantasy baseball the year after in 1998. At that time I could not have even imagined the concept of DFS as it was sometimes hard enough just to fill our season long leagues.

In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?

DFS has really compromised not only my season long play, but also my love for the home teams. DFS is a much quicker and easier way to play as you can play as much or as little as you want on any given day. I use to play approximately 10 season long teams a year and now I play only one.

How would you describe your overall approach to drafting?

Projections, spreadsheets, best available player, value.  It’s that easy.

Describe the night of your DFBC Qualifier win.

I decided to throw in a ticket into the $109 as I like that buyin the best. I did not have a ton of time but did a few minutes of research and fired a single bullet. I had not missed playing a day in quite some time so I felt like I had a feel of what was happening and what salaries to exploit.

What are you looking forward to the most about Vegas?

I am looking forward to meeting some of the familiar names that I see on the leaderboard all the time. While I have had the chance to meet a couple people, there are many new people I am excited to meet. The DFS community as a whole for the most part is extremely friendly (although competitive).

What would you do with the $1,000,000 if you did win?

Well I currently have a three month old baby girl and we plan on buying a house soon and eventually expanding the family. I know that is not very exciting but the reality is if I won I would just buy a nicer house and stash some in savings. If I didn’t have a family it would be tempting to go throw $100k on black for one roll of the roulette wheel though. If I won on that bet we would have one hell of a party that night in Vegas.
