2014 DFBC Finalist: Alarm is Ready to Go Off
If you run a fantasy sports strategy site, you better have the tournament credentials to back it up. Finalist alarm showed that the team behind his site was certainly no pushover as he took down his DFBC Qualifier with a comfortable lead.
How long have you been playing fantasy sports/baseball?
I’ve been playing fantasy sports since I was a teenager. I started a company with a few partners in 2010 so we’re not only players now, but working in the industry.
As for daily, I started in early 2011.
In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?
I really think they’re both great in their own way. They both have their charms. I’d say that if you’re succeeding at daily fantasy baseball, you’ll do well at season-long.
Daily raises the bar of skill on a day-to-day basis.
How would you describe your overall approach to drafting?
We’re unique in that we use company research and work as a team. We do a lot of research for the company and that’s where we put the picks that we ourselves intend to use because we think they’ll be the most successful for that day.
We want to use our tools to help daily fantasy players become more competitive. The focus isn’t really on me, but it’s a site-wide effort.
Describe the night of your DFBC Qualifier win.
It was interesting because many times we’ve come so close, but never quite took it down. This particular night, we got off to a good start and made it to the top of the leaderboard early. By the time the early games started to end, we had something like an 8-point lead. Madison Bumgarner (who we didn’t own, but was owned by several people who were within striking distance of us) was shelled in the first inning of his start and wasn’t anywhere near as good as people expected him to be. Ultimately, the whole Qualifier wasn’t a nail-biter by any means.
The best part about it was that we do the night-time show for Sirius XM so we were on air. We’re going out to a national audience and it was just really exciting to go through the emotions of qualifying on air.
What are you looking forward to the most about Vegas?
Just being out there as a team. Getting to spend time with other people in the industry, our friends at FanDuel, and our patrons and fans of our site. It’ll be nice to meet people who listen to our radio show. Other than that, I just want to try to relax and enjoy the whole experience. I know you guys put on a first class event.
What would you do with the $1,000,000 if you did win?
It’s not in my nature to make plans with winnings that aren’t in my pocket so you’ll have to ask me in August.
