2014 DFBC Finalist: Evilempire7 Goes Against the Grain

The one thing many daily fantasy baseball players will never compromise on is paying top dollar for their pitcher. Others will say that nothing is non-negotiable in the name of value. For evilempire7, going with the latter approach in the form of an underpriced Vance Worley paid off big time in clinching his DFBC Qualifier and a seat in the Las Vegas final.

How long have you been playing fantasy sports/baseball?

I started playing fantasy sports 4 years with season-long football. This is my first year of daily fantasy. I started with football, tried basketball, and figured I’d give baseball a shot. I fell in love with it.

In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?

At this point, I’m not even sure if I’ll play season-long ever again. I just enjoy daily much more. I like the fact that if I have a bad day, I can come out and start afresh the next day. For me there’s no comparison.

How would you describe your overall approach to drafting?

Being that I’m new to the game, what I try to do is spread out my contest formats. I play a little of each – head-to-head’s, tournaments, and so on. I’m trying to gain as much experience as possible. I play smaller contests so I can build up my bankroll and take shots at bigger tournaments – which is exactly what I did with the DFBC.

Describe the night of your DFBC Qualifier win.

I had won a couple of contests the night before so I had some extra money to put into the Qualifier. I was reading up on the Qualified Players page and I really wanted to take a shot so

Vance Worley had a very low salary and I had been keeping an eye on him. He had been pitching well so I was surprised his price was so low. I knew I had to go against the grain to have a chance so I decided to give him a shot along with some of the currently hot bats.

Cabrera gave me 2 HRs and the other batters came through, but I needed Worley to come through for me to have a real chance. He did exactly what I needed and gave me 6 scoreless innings. If they pulled him right then, I would have won for sure, but his pitch count was so low that they kept him in there. He ended up pitching very well and got a shutout. Once the game was finally over, I realized I was in first place.

I just couldn’t believe no one else picked him. There were other contestants who entered so many times, but they didn’t put him in any lineups.

What are you looking forward to the most about Vegas?

Looking forward to matching faces with the usernames that I see every day. I’m hoping I can pick up some tips from some of the best grinders out there. I know you guys throw a world-class party so I’m bringing my girlfriend and really looking forward to it.

What would you do with the $1,000,000 if you did win?

The first thing I’d do, without a doubt, is pay off my mom’s house so she can rest easy. Then I would finally get married to my girlfriend of fifteen years.
