TommyG1979 is as close a household name as you can get in the world of One-Day Fantasy Sports and he’s shown us why during this baseball season – a little over a month into the baseball season, he had already secured two entries into the DFBC live Final in Las Vegas! Read on to learn a little more about how he drafts his lineups and how he plans to spend that sweet $1,000,000.

How long have you been playing fantasy sports (and fantasy baseball in particular)?

I have been playing season-long leagues since 1995, back when we did the scoring out of the newspaper in class the next day.  I started with DFS less than 2 years ago, July 2012, and haven’t turned back since.

In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?

DFS is a threesome with Jessica Alba and Mila Kunis while season-long is making out with Betty White.

How would you describe your overall approach to drafting?

I am a tournament player, I don’t play H2H, so my approach is to figure out where the herd is going, then go the other way.  No one ever got rich following the herd.  I also watch every game and try to keep an eye on which players are seeing the ball well and are about to get hot and ride them regardless of matchup (barring an ace opposing them).  I do about 45 minutes of research a day – if you know the game, you don’t need all the metrics.  When you trust your gut, there are no regrets; when u analyze every piece of data, you find yourself spending the whole night going “I was gonna play him!” and it drives you nuts. Then that carries over into the next day.

Here’s my #1 rule: “Don’t play guys who suck.” It sounds comical, but so many people forget that a shitty player in a good matchup is still a shitty player.

Describe the night of your DFBC Qualifier win.

It wasn’t like I expected.  Last year when I qualified, I literally couldn’t sleep for two days because I was so jacked up.  This time, everyone was expecting me to qualify, so there was a bit more pressure – the first seat was literally a relief.  When it went final I literally gave a quick Jeter-esque fist pump, cracked a beer and just laid back and smiled. It didn’t hit me ‘til a couple days later.

The second one came out of nowhere cause I wasn’t even in the hunt until Toronto put up an 8 run inning late, but that one I was more excited about because I know how huge it is to be able to set 2 separate lineups with $1,000,000 on the line.  I’ll tell you how my third feels next month ;)

What’re you looking forward to the most about Vegas?

Getting banned for life for lighting the club on fire at the Tommy G Million Dollar Man Afterparty.

What would you do with the $1,000,000 if you won 1st place?

There’s no “if.” I already have a list made of stuff to blow it on when I win:  an iced out Rolex Presidential; an Audi R8; a sports amphitheater with 8 60-inch TVs and stadium seating for the ultimate man cave; two midget butlers; a giraffe to ride around town on Sundays; $50,000 worth of sick memorabilia; an Iron Man suit (like a real one where I can shoot lasers out of my chest and stuff); and a monkey named Giancarlo who will hang out on my shoulder and throw feces at anyone who pisses me off. True story. See you in August!
