2014 DFBC Finalist: Chig Keeps Chugging into DFBC Final
Return trip secured! Chig was visiting family in Las Vegas when he submitted his lineup for the DFBC Qualifier. Now he’ll be coming back in August for a chance at the $1,000,000 first place prize.
How long have you been playing fantasy sports/baseball?
I’ve been playing fantasy sports for about fifteen years – started with fantasy football, been doing baseball only for about 10 years. There were people still calculating the results by hand when I first started. As for daily, I started playing it less than a year ago.
In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?
Daily is much more competitive, which makes it more fun. There are also other factors that I always think about when I’m doing daily versus season-long. Things like weather and matchup are much more important. And it’s a lot of fun to change your players every day.
What is your overall approach to drafting a lineup? What are the elements and factors that are important to you?
The weather and matchups are the key I think. I try to look for a good strikeout pitcher who has a decent matchup. Then I want to make sure I get at least a few big bats and then some players who have a decent track record against the pitchers they’re up against.
Describe the night you won your DFBC Qualifier.
I was actually in Vegas visiting my father and step-mother. My dad and I went to a show so I couldn’t have my phone on. I just checked the status before I went in, but I had a lot of players who were in the later games and so my lineups weren’t doing much of anything. By the time I got out of the show, I was in 1st place. At that point I was just sitting there with my dad sweating the results.
What are you looking forward to the most about Las Vegas?
I think it’s just going to be a fun experience overall. For me, I think the competition is going to be the best part. What better place to do it than Las Vegas?
If you won 1st place, what would you do with the $1,000,000?
That’s a lot of money. My kids’ college costs would be covered, that’s for sure. I plan to move back up to Boston as well and the money will help with that. Boston’s my hometown and it’s a little more expensive up there than where I live now.
