2014 DFBC Finalist: Experience Pays Off for Bluestem89
Bluestem89, or Dave, has been playing on FanDuel since the site began. He’s gotten to know many of FanDuel’s top players over the years and is proud to call them his friends. For him, the trip to Vegas is more than just about the money – it’s a chance to catch up with the guys. Of course, he still has big plans for that $1,000,000, if he were to win it.
How long have you been playing fantasy sports/baseball?
I started with season-long leagues in 1999 when we used to have to get the Monday newspaper to get all the stats for NFL. This was fresh out of high school (I graduated in ’97). I started playing fantasy baseball in around 2004 or 2005. I got into daily on FanDuel – I’ve been playing with you guys since about when you started and I’ve been hooked ever since. I don’t go out or party like I used to since I’ve got a wife and kids now so this is where I get my fun.
In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?
I like them all. Ironically, even though I love daily fantasy, I don’t like the season-long leagues where I have to change a guy every day. I usually do a season-long with my buddies and that’s always fun. It’s always been just about having fun for me.
How would you describe your overall approach to drafting?
I like to look at batter versus pitcher match ups, but that can sometimes really come around and bite you. I’ve hopped around on a couple of different strategies. For example, I tried the four-on-four stack, but that didn’t work out so well for me so now I mainly concentrate on drafting a solid lineup.
Describe the night of your DFBC Qualifier win.
Oh, boy. I was out getting the wife some ice cream and my friend who also plays on FanDuel started calling my phone to let me know I had a chance. I went home and started cheering like crazy. To be honest with you, I don’t recall all the details because it passed by in a blur, but it was a nutty night and a sweet win.
What are you looking forward to the most about Vegas?
I am going to have a blast seeing all the other guys. A lot of the big grinders are my buddies and we’ve all been playing daily fantasy together for years now. I’m flying out a couple days early so I can get acclimated and relax.
What would you do with the $1,000,000 if you did win?
I would put the money into the trucking business, which is my main line of work. I want to expand my company and give locals more opportunities to work so that’s where most of it would go. I already own several trucks and am speaking to a broker to increase the fleet.
