2014 DFBC Finalist: 3putts Sweats Out A Victory

Holding on to first position in any daily fantasy tournament can be a challenge, but never as difficult as when you’re playing in the DFBC Qualifier with a trip to Las Vegas and a shot at $1,000,000 on the line! With only a 2-pt difference between him and the next opponent and bases loaded, 3putts had a heck of a sweat before finally securing the victory… and his seat at the DFBC Live Final.

How long have you been playing fantasy baseball?

I started playing daily fantasy baseball last season on FanDuel. I played a full season league or two in some of the CDM, contests but that was at least 10 years ago.

In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?

I much prefer the daily games to season long, which is probably the same answer you’d get from everyone who has played both.

How would you describe your overall approach to drafting?

I start by picking all of my favorite players.  If I have a tough decision for my last couple roster spots I flip a coin to choose between a couple cheap salary guys I’ve never heard of.  Okay, maybe I don’t do that.   I’m not doing anything fancy with my baseball strategy.  When selecting my batters I target the weaker pitchers, preferably in hitters’ parks and take pitchers facing weaker offenses preferably in neutral or pitchers parks.  Sometimes I stack batters from a couple of teams other days I’m more balanced.

Describe the night of your DFBC Qualifier win.

I had Lance Lynn pitching and hitters from the Braves and Mets.  I was out for dinner and there was a TV with the Atlanta / Philly game on, I wasn’t really paying attention but did notice there was no runs early in the game so I didn’t think I had much of a chance.  Later on that evening I noticed the Braves piled up a ton of runs late vs Philly and Lynn put up a huge score vs the Brewers so I started to think I had a chance if the Mets came through.

Late in the contest I had a narrow lead so I started to scoreboard watch. The player behind me was about 2 points behind and had Tulowitzki on the road vs the Padres.  He came up with the bases loaded and hit a line drive right at the third baseman so I got pretty lucky there.  He came up again in the 9th inning and grounded out to give me a narrow win.  My girlfriend had gone to bed, she usually falls asleep in about 30 seconds but that night she kept asking me for updates.  I guess she really wants to go to Vegas.

What are you looking forward to the most about Vegas?

A chance to win the million.

And what would you do with the $1,000,000 if you did win?

I’d buy a bigger house or maybe I’d add it all to my bankroll and battle with Condia every day during NBA season.
