Our first Vegas Finalist, adg1985, had exactly 0 recorded MLB wins to his name before competing in and winning the first 2014 DFBC Qualifier. That’s right, the contest victory that earned him a trip to Vegas and a shot at $1,000,000 was his first MLB win on FanDuel. That’s one-day fantasy for you – on any given day, your lineup just might be the one.

We sat down with adg1985 to talk daily fantasy, the art of avoiding Oakland’s park, and what he plans to do with the first place prize should he win it.

How long have you been playing fantasy baseball?

I’ve been playing for about 10, 11 years. Usually just in friendly, head-to-head leagues. As for daily fantasy, I’ve done football on FanDuel for a couple of years, but this is my first year trying baseball. I saw the tournaments being offered and figured I’d give it a try.

In your opinion, how does daily fantasy compare to season-long?

I like daily fantasy because you’re not stuck with the same team, guys getting injured. It’s more exciting and you have a chance to win money every day.

Let’s get down to business. You’ve won the first 2014 DFBC Qualifier, which means you’re the first person to secure the trip to Vegas and a shot at the million. Tell us about the night you won.

Basically, I had been looking at it up until 10:30 and I was in the top 80 at that point. I figured there might be a chance, but I eventually got tired and went to bed. I woke up the next morning and it kinda slipped my mind. I almost forgot to check the results. When I found out that I had won, I was pretty shocked. Even then I was still unsure because of the rainout.

Could you speak more about your overall approach to drafting a lineup? What were some of the key elements to your victory in the qualifier? For example, a lot of people were heavily affected by the Cleveland-Oakland rainout. Did you anticipate that?

I didn’t want to start any guys in Oakland. It wasn’t because of the weather, but because of the park. Plus there weren’t any guys I was really interested in.

What would you do with the $1,000,000 prize if you took 1st place?

I’d give some money to my family members, help them out a little bit. Probably buy a house and a new car. I’d just want to be as smart as I can about managing it. Oh, and I’d definitely put a nice chunk of it back on FanDuel.
