FanDuel Mailbag 8/29/13 – Chet Gresham Answers Your Fantasy Football Questions
“Are the new batch of mobile QBs going to be playable bargains week 1: EJ Manuel, Geno Smith and Terrelle Pryor?”
Much like Tim Tebow with the Broncos any rushing quarterback can have great value as you, but week one is going to be a stretch. I would like to make sure they are secure in their jobs before I use them, but could see throwing a wildcard team with their prices on FanDuel should remain low enough for them to be nice upside bargain plays once we know they are entrenched in their jobs and won’t be benched mid throw.
“Reports on @RGIII sound good health wise, but with no preseason action, how comfortable are you starting him week 1?”
All the reports have been glowing regarding his health so far this preseason. Coach Shanahan has been taking him along slowly but he’s been able to do more than they allow. He also has a very nice matchup against the Eagles at home in week one. They gave up the most passing touchdowns in the league last season and by all accounts haven’t improved much in the secondary.
“What do you think about Christian Ponder in the big field tournaments?”
The Vikings will remain the Adrian Peterson show even when they fall behind. His big play ability often puts points on the board much quicker than Ponder trying to hit anyone deep. And that’s Ponder’s main difficulty, deep passing. Last season he only threw for over 300 yards once and over two touchdowns once in a meaningless week 17 matchup. If he had some history of putting up big games once in a while I’d be more inclined to throw him in big tournaments.
“I really like Cam Newton this year but would you start him in Week 1 versus the Seahawks?”
Newton is one of those players you must start in yearly leagues unless you happen to have a stud backup for some reason, but for FanDuel a good rule of thumb is never start anyone against the Seahawks. Last season only two quarterbacks threw for over 300 yards, Matthew Stafford and Tom Brady and only one threw more than two touchdowns, Stafford.
“Patriots or Bucs defense week one?”
I really like both defenses quite a bit. They both go on the road, which isn’t my favorite option usually, but they both will most likely take on quarterbacks with very little experience. Much will depend on who ends up starting for the Buffalo Bills. If E.J. Manuel ends up playing for the Bills I will most likely go with the Buccaneers between the two and if Jeff Tuel starts I’ll go with the Patriots.
“Which two running backs do you think will have the best week 1 and very briefly why do you think that?”
I like Steven Ridley and Steven Jackson for week one. The Bills rush defense is perennially poor, ranking second to last in fantasy points given up to running backs last season, and if Jeff Tuel starts there’s a good chance Ridley will be all the Patriots need to win. Ridley also averaged over 100 yards rushing against the Bills last season and scored two touchdowns. His odds of scoring a touchdown in a game last year was 62.5%. I like it.
Jackson gets to face the worst team in the league against running backs last season, the New Orleans Saints. To get a little perspective into the difference in offense that Jackson is experiencing, the St. Louis Rams ran 108 plays inside the opponents 20 yard line, while the Atlanta Falcons ran 173 and 23 of them came against the Saints. He will have plenty of opportunities against a poor defense. I like his chances.
