Fantasy Football 2011: Week 1 IDP Rankings

September 8 3:05am

By Antonio D’Arcangelis

For some, playing fantasy football is a relatively leisurely pursuit, but for those in the world of IDP – the individual defensive player format – it’s an obsession. For that reason, we here at FanDuel want to offer you a bevy of position-specific weekly IDP rankings, even though this aspect may not be part of our games here at the site. I know there’s a shortage of solid, up-to-date IDP information online, so I’ve compiled rankings for Week 1 and will continue this column for the remainder of the season. I’ll be adjusting my rankings from week to week based on opportunity, matchups, injuries, breaking news, performance, bye weeks and all the little schematic changes that IDP fanatics hold dear. If you’ve got a specific IDP question, don’t hesitate to e-mail me or contact me via Twitter. Enjoy the rankings and good luck!

Notes: Panthers LB Jon Beason is questionable with a foot injury but still hopes to play…he’s worth a start in all formats if he’s good to go by gametime. Bears LB Lance Briggs (knee) is asking for a trade and might not be with the team by the end of the week, though the Bears have not made any statements and Briggs claims he’ll play his best until something changes. I’ve left him off this week’s rankings, but if he’s active on Sunday, he could be worth starting as an LB3. Texans LB DeMeco Ryans (elbow) is probable for Week 1, and HC Gery Kubiak expects him to play. If he’s 100 percent, he’s a solid LB2.

Notes: Giants DE Osi Umenyiora (hip, knee) has been ruled out for Week 1. Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap (knee) missed all of the preseason and is questionable for the season opener. He had a nice rookie season (9.5 sacks), but isn’t a big tackle numbers guy and remains a question mark heading into 2011.
