Injury Update: Friday, April 15

By Antonio D’Arcangelis

I’m dropping in a quick injury update for your weekend lineups. There’s a lot of scratch at stake; the $5K Friday MLB MVP has a $100 entry fee but you can rake in the cash, while the  $1K Friday MLB Hit & Run and $4K Saturday MLB Home Run offer more economical options. So make sure you keep refreshing your searches on these walking wounded before you plug in your final lineup. Remember – if a player was already on the DL as of this past Monday, and not slated to come off before this weekend is over, you won’t find him here. This is for recently injured players you may or may not know about – as well as dudes gettin’ ready to take the field once again for their squads.

Kosuke Fukudome, CHC – He missed the series with Houston, but now the left hamstring strain has him questionable for today’s contest in Colorado. That’s a good sign, but it’s not any kind of mandate.

Jay Bruce, CIN – Bruce tweaked his groin during Tuesday’s game in San Diego and didn’t play Wednesday.  The Reds were off on Thursday, and while he’s still a question for Friday, it sounds like he wants to play.

Brandon Phillips, CIN – Like his teammate, Phillips suffered a groin injury (after chasing down a pickoff throw during Wednesday’s tilt with the Padres) and could miss some action. Stay tuned.

Magglio Ordonez, DET – Ordonez is doubtful for Friday (Achiles) and might miss the entire weekend series with Oakland.

Rafael Furcal, LAD – Furcal’s on the DL with a thumb injury. Not good.

Joe Mauer, MIN – The game’s best backstop has been sidelined with leg “weakness” apparently stemming from his offseason arthroscopic surgery and light spring workload. He’s on the DL and out for at least a week or so.

Chris Young, NYM – I don’t like to hear that Young is hurtin’ but he’s optimistic about making Sunday’s start in Atlanta. Still….this sounds like a “buyer beware” situation as far as daily fantasy sports is concerned.

Andres Torres, SF – The nagging Achilles injury could keep Torres out a couple more games. I’m seeking OF assistance elsewhere.

Freddy Sanchez, SF – A shoulder injury has Sanchez questionable for Friday’s game in Arizona. You can find better options.

Josh Hamilton, TEX – You’ve probably heard the bad news about Hamilton. No, he didn’t relapse, but he’s out of commission for 6-8 weeks with a broken bone in his shoulder – an “aggressive play” injury suffered on a head-first slide into home.

Alexi Ogando, TEX – Ogando’s unremitting pitching hand (index finger, to be precise) blister shouldn’t keep him from making the start Sunday against the Yankees. The Yanks’ stacked lineup could be another problem altogether.

Ryan Zimmerman, WAS – He’s on the 15-day DL with an abdominal injury and will probably be out until late this month. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
