Marcus Maye
S / New Orleans Saints
Maye (shoulder) has had charges dropped following a September 2022 arrest in New Orleans, La. due to insufficient evidence, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
What it means:
Maye's arrest stemmed from accusations of aggravated assault with a firearm, for which he won't face any legal ramifications. However, the NFL may weigh in if it's found that he violated the personal conduct policy. Prior to missing the last three games of last season due to a shoulder injury, Maye totaled 60 tackles, two pass defenses and one forced fumble in 10 appearances.
Jamaal Williams
RB / New Orleans Saints
Jamaal Williams becoming member of Saints
What it means:
The New Orleans Saints are signing running back Jamaal Williams to a three-year, $12 million contract.
Williams led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns on the Detroit Lions last season and recorded his first 1,000-yard rushing season. His previous high-water mark was 601 yards in the year prior. Turning 28 in April, Williams will complement Alvin Kamara in the Saints' backfield and likely vulture some short-yardage scores. He carries additional upside because Kamara is facing a potential suspension for an off-field incident in Las Vegas.
Williams rushed 262 times for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Lions last season. He had the most carries in the league inside the 10-yard line (46) and the five-yard line (34).
Ty Summers
LB / New Orleans Saints
Summers re-signed with the Saints on a one-year contract Wednesday, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
What it means:
Summers appeared in three games for New Orleans in 2022 after being signed off Jacksonville's practice squad. The 27-year-old linebacker will likely fill a depth role for the Saints in 2023.
Alvin Kamara
RB / New Orleans Saints
Kamara has added competition for carries this coming season after Saints agreed to sign free agent Jamaal Williams on Wednesday.
What it means:
Kamara's overall production stagnated as he dealt with numerous lingering injuries throughout the 2022 campaign, logging 1,387 total yards on 280 touches across 15 regular-season games. However, he still accounted for the vast majority of the Saints' carries at running back, as the team sorely lacked depth in the backfield and across the offense as a whole. This figures to change following the addition of Williams. The 224-pound bruiser served as the No. 2 back behind Aaron Jones in Green Bay for four seasons. Across 17 regular-season games with Detroit in 2022, Williams finished with 262 carries for 1,066 yards and a franchise-record 17 touchdowns. The 27-year-old Williams should once again fall into a complementary role in New Orleans while playing behind Kamara. The Saints' No. 1 running back is still set to begin trail July 31 after he was charged with conspiracy to commit battery and substantial bodily harm stemming from a February 2022 incident. Therefore, Kamara's availability for the beginning of the 2023 campaign will likely be up in the air until this case concludes.
Jamaal Williams
RB / New Orleans Saints
The Saints and Williams agreed to terms on a three-year contract Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
What it means:
After racking up an NFL-high and team-record 17 rushing touchdowns for the Lions last season, Williams now will move on to the third organization of his career. With New Orleans, he'll be the clear second option out of the backfield behind Alvin Kamara, but Williams still should earn his typical allotment of short-yardage and goal-line work.
Albert Huggins
DT / New Orleans Saints
Huggins (undisclosed) didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Saints on Wednesday and is now a free agent, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
What it means:
Huggins spent the entire 2022 campaign on IR after suffering an undisclosed injury during the Saints' final preseason game. However, the undrafted defensive tackle out of Clemson appears to be healthy heading into free agency. Huggins has appeared in 14 contests with three different teams (Eagles, Lions and Saints) since joining the league in 2019, totaling 19 tackles across 265 defensive snaps.
