Houston Texans 2022-23 Fantasy Outlook

The Houston Texans won just 4 games last year, and there’s no doubt the franchise will enter this season in full rebuild mode. Fortunately, the team used the draft picks it acquired by dealing away quarterback Deshaun Watson to initiate that rebuilding process. In addition, now that he has some experience under his belt, quarterback Davis Mills could prove that he deserves to continue lining up under center for Houston as the team gets their footing. Across the 13 starts, he made last season, Mills tossed 16 TDs and put up 2,664 passing yards.

New offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton will have to work some magic to turn this Texans offense into a playoff-caliber squad. Bringing back veteran offensive linemen like Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard will certainly help, but it remains to be seen whether running back Marlon Mack will be able to handle an RB1 role after mustering just 10.9 Fantasy points. If anyone would have provided an instant spark for Houston’s offense, it probably would’ve been rookie receiver John Metchie III. Unfortunately, due to a recent leukemia diagnosis, the Alabama product will probably not take the field this year.

Houston Texans Fantasy Defense

Offenses ran through Houston’s defense like Swiss cheese last year. The team gave up the 3rd-most points in the NFL and ended up scoring the 25th-most Fantasy points. To make matters worse, the Texans will not have star safety Justin Reid in the secondary this year, as the Chiefs snapped him up during the offseason. On the bright side, linebacker Christian Kirksey and defensive lineman Maliek Collins are poised to shore up the interior of Houston’s defense again. The Texans also picked defensive back Derek Stingley Jr. with the 3rd pick in the draft before adding safety Jalen Pitre in the 2nd round. Throw in veteran corner Steven Nelson, who had 34 solo tackles last season, and the Texans’ revamped secondary just might be able to compensate for their front-7's struggles.
