Jacob Eason

Jacob Eason

QB / Carolina Panthers
The Panthers signed Eason to a reserve/future contract Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Analysis:

Eason was signed to the Panthers' practice squad after being cut by the Seahawks ahead of the initial 53-man roster deadline. He was quickly thrust into backup duties behind P.J. Walker after Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold suffered ankle injuries, but Eason was ultimately cut after Darnold returned from injured reserve. Eason then joined the 49ers' practice squad in mid-November and stayed their until he was cut at the beginning of January. With his new deal, he'll rejoin Carolina's organization and be able to compete for a backup role during the offseason.

Colin Thompson

Colin Thompson

TE / Carolina Panthers
Thompson's (calf) contract with the Panthers' practice squad expired Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Analysis:

Thompson spent the last three years with Carolina, primarily playing as a core special-teamer in 26 regular-season games during this span. The 29-year-old tight end was then waived with a calf injury at the end of this preseason before re-joining via the practice squad Aug. 31. Thompson then did not appear in a game during the 2022 campaign, and he'll look to record just his second NFL reception heading into the 2023 campaign.

Derrick Brown

Derrick Brown

DT / Carolina Panthers
Brown made a career-high 67 tackles (30 solo) to go with one sack and seven passes defended while playing all 17 games across the 2022 season.

Analysis:

Brown also intercepted the first pass of his career, an added bonus to his most productive tackling campaign thus far. Since being drafted seventh overall in 2020, Brown has struggled getting to the passer consistently, but he at least elevated his performance elsewhere this season. Depending on whether the Panthers pick up his fifth-year option or not, 2023 could be Brown's final under contact in Carolina.

Jeremy Chinn

Jeremy Chinn

S / Carolina Panthers
Chinn made 70 tackles (51 solo), one sack and defended six passes while playing only 11 games in the 2022 season.

Analysis:

Chinn's streak of 100-plus tackle campaigns ended in his third year, as a hamstring injury forced him to miss a significant chunk of the campaign. When healthy, Chinn was his usual productive self, with his six pass breakups actually marking a career high. With 2023 representing the final year of the former second-round pick's rookie deal, Chinn will hope for a pay day and a good bill of health in order to return to his previous heights.

Xavier Woods

Xavier Woods

S / Carolina Panthers
Woods made 86 tackles (53 solo), broke up six passes and recovered two fumbles while playing 15 games in the 2022 season.

Analysis:

Woods' tackle total marked the second highest of his career, only trailing last year's output in Minnesota. The veteran ranked third on the Panthers in stops and passes defended and is under contract for another two years in Carolina.

Frankie Luvu

Frankie Luvu

LB / Carolina Panthers
Luvu made 111 tackles (76 solo) and seven sacks while forcing a fumble and returning an interception for a touchdown across his 15 games in the 2022 season.

Analysis:

Luvu was one of the Panthers' breakout players, dramatically increasing his production after just 43 stops in 16 games last year. The 26-year-old boasted just 7.5 career sacks prior to this season, and Luvu surpassed his previous career total of passes defended with four in 2022. Under contract with Carolina for one more season, Luvu's stock has never been higher.
