The Dolphins signed Ahmed to a one-year, $1.8 million contract Friday, Mike Masala of DolphinsWire reports.

What it means:

Ahmed is slated to remain in Miami for at least one more season, while fellow Dolphins' running backs Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson and Myles Gaskin are all in line to become unrestricted free agents come March 15. The 24-year-old has primarily operated as a part of a backfield committee throughout his first three years in the NFL, and he concluded this previous campaign with 21 touches for 120 combined rushing and receiving yards and one touchdown across 13 games.
rotoWire
Ahmed handled five carries for three yards during the Dolphins' 34-31 wild-card playoff loss to the Bills. He also secured three of five targets for 45 yards.

What it means:

Ahmed saw slightly increased utilization during Miami's playoff loss with Raheem Mostert (thumb) unable to go. Through 12 regular-season appearances in 2022, Ahmed handled a total of 12 carries for 64 yards and one touchdown, while securing his only target for eight yards. The 24-year-old is set to be a restricted free agent this offseason.
rotoWire
Ahmed took his only carry for seven yards during Sunday's 11-6 win over the Jets.

What it means:

Ahmed handled his usual rotational role Week 18, but depending on the status of Raheem Mostert (finger) coming off a fractured thumb, he could be in for increased opportunities during the wild-card playoff matchup against the Bills. The Dolphins will be without Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) in Buffalo, so the team could lean more on the running game than usual.
rotoWire
Ahmed did not handle an offensive snap during Sunday's 26-20 loss to the Packers.

What it means:

Ahmed wasn't utilized in a complementary offensive role with both Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson healthy and active. He was instead limited to special teams, where he handled 38 percent of snaps. Though competent if called upon, Ahmed doesn't have a clear path to fantasy relevance heading into a Week 17 divisional matchup against the Patriots.
rotoWire
Ahmed rushed six times for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Dolphins' 32-29 loss to the Bills on Saturday night.

What it means:

Ahmed saw an elevated role with Jeff Wilson (hip) sidelined, and he ultimately logged one more carry than he had all season. Ahmed made good use of the rare opportunity, scoring on a 11-yard run late in the first half to bring the Dolphins to within a point. Despite the encouraging results Saturday, it's difficult to envision Ahmed getting more than just a handful of snaps if Wilson is back for the Week 16 Christmas Day home clash against the Packers, although his performance could ensure he and not Myles Gaskin garners active status for that contest as the No. 3 running back.
rotoWire
Ahmed (back) was listed as a full participant on the Dolphins' injury report Wednesday, David Furones of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

What it means:

Ahmed was ruled inactive for Miami's Week 5 loss to the Jets after being limited with a back injury in practice Thursday and Friday. However, the 23-year-old running back appears to be healthy again after returning in full for the Dolphins' first practice of Week 6. Ahmed has been exclusively used over two games played this season, though he could see his first offensive snaps if running back Raheem Mostert (knee) is unable to suit up for Sunday's game against the Vikings.
