Golladay was released by the Giants on Wednesday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
What it means:
This news comes as no surprise, as Golladay put up a pair of highly unproductive seasons after signing a four-year, $72 million contract in 2021. The move will save New York $6.7 million against the salary cap. As for Golladay, it remains to be seen how much interest he'll draw as a free agent. The wideout had a pair of 1,000-plus yard receiving seasons in four years with the Lions but tallied a meager six catches on 17 targets for 81 yards and a touchdown in 2022.
The Giants will release Golladay on March 15, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
What it means:
By waiting until the new league year starts, the Giants will save $6.7 million against their salary cap. The 2017 third-round pick signed a massive four-year, $72 million contract with New York in March of 2021, but he failed to live up to the lofty deal, making his release unsurprising. He posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Lions in 2018 and 2019 and secured 16 touchdowns during that stretch. However, he's caught just 63 passes for 940 yards and three scores in 31 appearances over the past three seasons. Per Field Yates of ESPN, Golladay will still be owed $4.5 million by the Giants after his release, so he may be willing to take a cheaper deal with a contending team in 2023, though it remains to be seen what type of attention he'll draw as a free agent.
Golladay caught two of seven targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 22-16 loss to the Eagles.
What it means:
In his 26th and potentially final game for the Giants, Golladay finally got into the end zone for his first TD with the team, catching a 25-yard toss from Davis Webb late in the fourth quarter during a game in which New York was resting most of its starters. Golladay suited up for 12 games this season and finished with a 6-81-1 line on 17 targets, disastrous production relative to his cap hit of over $21 million. The 29-year-old has two more years remaining on his current deal, but it seems almost certain the Giants will cut him loose in the offseason.
Golladay did not see any targets in the Giants' Week 14 loss to Philadelphia on Sunday.
What it means:
Golladay logged only 11 offensive snaps in the contest, significantly less than the amount tallied by fellow wideouts Richie James (58), Isaiah Hodgins (57) and Darius Slayton (53). It may be hard to remember that Golladay was slated to be New York's top wideout coming into the campaign, as he hasn't come close to matching the 44 offensive snaps he logged in Week 1 against Tennessee. In fact, Golladay has only two catches since the season opener, both of which came Week 11 against Detroit. He's nowhere near the fantasy radar at this point.
Golladay (illness) was a full practice participant Wednesday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
What it means:
Golladay sat out this past Sunday versus the Commanders due to an illness that he came down with one day prior. Now that he's operating on all cylinders again on the practice field, though, he's good to go moving forward. Still, Golladay is no better than fourth in the wide receiver pecking order for the Giants, with all of Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins and Richie James (knee) better bets to connect with quarterback Daniel Jones on game days.
Giants' Kenny Golladay (illness) out for Week 13
What it means:
New York Giants wide receiver Kenny Golladay (illness) has been ruled out of Week 13's game against the Washington Commanders.
Golladay has been downgraded from questionable to out due to an illness and will not be available to face Washington on Sunday. Darius Slayton (illness) is available.
Slayton's Week 13 projection includes 3.2 receptions, 41.6 yards, 0.22 touchdowns, and 7.0 FanDuel points. His salary is $6,200.
