Dolphins re-sign running back Jeff Wilson to 2-year contract
What it means:
The Miami Dolphins have signed running back Jeff Wilson to a two-year deal on Tuesday.
Miami will keep their running back group mostly intact after they choose to re-sign Wilson and Raheem Mostert. In an offense ranked 26th (38.0) in run percentage last season, expect Wilson to see a similar amount of volume after he registered 11.7 touches per game when Mostert was also active.
On 198 total touches last season, Wilson ranked 48th among running backs with a 66.9 Pro Football Focus offensive rating while producing 1,045 scrimmage yards, 6 total touchdowns, 2.62 yards per attempt after contact, and 28 forced missed tackles.
The Dolphins re-signed Wilson to a two-year contract Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
What it means:
One day removed from retaining Raheem Mostert, Miami now brings back its core backfield duo from the 2022 season. After the 49ers dealt Wilson to South Beach at the trade deadline last November, he racked up 96 touches for 486 yards and four TDs in eight contests, while Mostert racked up a 98-544-3 line in the same span. Expect a similar breakdown for the pair in the coming campaign.
Wilson said Monday he hopes to re-sign with the Dolphins, Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post reports.
What it means:
Wilson signed Drew Rosenhaus as his new representative and said he 'hopes it's very likely' he returns to Miami for the 2023 season. The Dolphins made a mid-season trade with the 49ers last year to acquire Wilson in exchange for a fifth-round pick, and the veteran logged an efficient 4.7 YPC and three touchdowns in eight games with his new team. With Raheem Mostert also a pending free agent, it could make sense for Miami to bring back one or both of the veteran backs, both of whom are extensively familiar with coach Mike McDaniel's scheme.
Wilson rushed 10 times for 23 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Bills in the wild-card round. He also caught one of four targets for 13 yards.
What it means:
Wilson started with Raheem Mostert (thumb) sidelined and made it a one-score game with his one-yard touchdown during the fourth quarter. Although it otherwise wasn't a very productive performance from Wilson, he made a good impact upon joining the Dolphins midway through this season, rushing 84 times for 392 yards (4.7 per carry) and three touchdowns in eight games. He also caught 12 of 24 targets for 94 yards and another score. With Wilson being an unrestricted free agent this offseason, it'll be interesting to see whether his familiarity with Miami head coach Mike McDaniel will result in the tailback returning to the team.
Wilson is set to lead Miami's backfield in Sunday's playoff game against the Bills, as Adam Beasley of Pro Football Network reports that Raheem Mostert (thumb) has been ruled out.
What it means:
Wilson should see the bulk of carries in Mostert's absence, and Miami will likely try to lean on its running game with third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson under center. Salvon Ahmed will back up Wilson, who mustered 52 scrimmage yards and a touchdown on 14 touches against the Texans when Mostert sat out in Week 12.
Wilson (illness) returned to a full practice Thursday, Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald reports.
What it means:
Wilson was listed as a limited participant at practice Wednesday due to an illness, but the running back's return to a full session one day later puts him on track to be available for Sunday's wild-card round matchup against the Bills. Meanwhile, Raheem Mostert (thumb) missed his second straight practice Thursday and if he's out this weekend, Wilson would likely be in store for an expanded workload in Miami's backfield versus Buffalo.
