San Francisco's Brock Purdy (elbow) undergoes surgery on Friday, expected to throw in 3 months
What it means:
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is expected to throw in three months after successful surgery for his UCL elbow injury.
Purdy is reportedly expected to be at full strength around the second week of September. Expect Trey Lance to take over San Francisco's starting quarterback role while Purdy works his way back.
On 170 attempts last season, Purdy ranked 13th among quarterbacks with a 77.7 Pro Football Focus offensive rating while producing 114 completions for 13 touchdowns and 1374 yards, a 77.7% adjusted completion percentage, and a 1.8% big-time throw rate.
Purdy underwent surgery on his right elbow Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
What it means:
Per the report, the procedure entailed ulnar collateral ligament repair in the QB's throwing elbow with an internal brace, with the expectation being that Purdy can resume throwing in about three months. Beyond that, it remains to be seen when the 23-year-old signal-caller can resume practicing fully and his status for the start of the coming NFL season has yet to be determined. In Purdy's looming absence, 2021 first-rounder Trey Lance -- who is bouncing back from ankle injury that derailed his 2022 campaign -- is in line to work with the 49ers' first-team offense once on-field activities resume.
Purdy (elbow) is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
What it means:
Purdy's initially scheduled elbow procedure had to be postponed due to swelling two weeks ago, but his torn UCL is now set to be addressed Friday. After completing his surgery, Purdy will be able to begin the preliminary steps of what projects to be a lengthy recovery. There's an amount of uncertainty surrounding the 49ers' quarterback room, as Trey Lance (ankle) is recovering from a fractured fibula and ligament disruption in his right ankle suffered Week 2. Lance, however, is expected to be 100 percent for OTAs, meaning Purdy could have to play catch-up.
Purdy (elbow) will meet with his surgeon later this week and hopes to undergo surgery next week, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
What it means:
Purdy was originally scheduled to undergo surgery for his torn UCL on February 22, but he has continued to experience swelling in the elbow since injuring it in the playoff loss to the Eagles. Purdy will have a lengthy rehab once he does go under the knife, so the 49ers are expected to dabble in the free-agent market at quarterback this offseason.
Purdy (elbow) will have his planned surgery date delayed from Feb. 22 until early March due to continued swelling, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
What it means:
Purdy made an appearance on KNBR San Francisco earlier in the month and detailed his plan to meet with with Dr. Keith Meister on the day before his surgery to get clearance for "a hybrid surgery" that would include a reconstruction. The most optimistic timetable for his recovery is to resume throwing after three months, so the delayed timeline would would see that date pushed back to early June. Trey Lance (ankle) is expected to be healthy in time for the offseason program, so Purdy will be playing even a little more catch up now once his health is back up to par.
Purdy revealed during an appearance on KNBR San Francisco on Thursday that the plan to repair the tear of the UCL in his right throwing elbow on Feb. 22 may change during the surgery.
What it means:
Purdy is slated to meet with Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas on Feb. 21 before undergoing the procedure one day later. While an InternalBrace repair is scheduled, Meister will have clearance to opt for "a hybrid surgery" that also would include a reconstruction. "Yeah, that's Dr. Meister's call," Purdy said. "He's done this year after year with the best of the best with MLB pitchers. So he's definitely seen this kind of thing happen, and he's going to make the best call, and not just for the heck of it. It's obviously for the best call for my career moving forward." The most optimistic timetable for Purdy's recovery is for the quarterback to resume throwing after three months and be ready for training camp, but that's subject to change. With Trey Lance (ankle) expected to be healthy by the offseason program, Purdy will be playing catch up no matter what happens during the upcoming operation.
