Gibson (knee/foot) had surgery Thursday to address a fracture in his foot, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
What it means:
Gibson played through the fracture for most of December but then missed the final two games of the regular season after spraining his knee Week 16. He's expected to recover in time for offseason workouts, at which point he'll be in the fourth and final season of his rookie contract. Rookie RB Brian Robinson, meanwhile, will miss Week 18 with a knee injury that isn't considered especially serious. Jonathan Williams and Jaret Patterson are Washington's healthy backs for the season finale, while Robinson and Gibson should be ready in the spring.
Commanders place Antonio Gibson (knee, foot) on injured reserve
What it means:
The Washington Commanders placed Antonio Gibson (knee, foot) on injured reserve.
The Commanders will hold Gibson out for the final game of the season after he was also inactive for Week 17. They added running back Jaret Patterson from the practice squad in a corresponding roster move. Brian Robinson (knee) isn't practicing again on Thursday, so Patterson and Jonathan Williams could wind up splitting backfield duties against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18.
Gibson averaged 9.5 FanDuel points per game this season and his value steadily declined once Brian Robinson returned from his injury. He will turn 25 this summer and his rookie deal is up after next season, so Gibson will have some additional incentive to perform in 2023.
Washington placed Gibson (knee/foot) on injured reserve Thursday, Zach Selby of the Commanders' official site reports.
What it means:
Though Gibson's pair of lower-body injuries aren't believed to be long-term concerns, the Commanders will err on the side of caution by holding him out of Sunday's season finale against the Cowboys. By moving Gibson to IR, the Commanders were able to free up a spot on the 53-man roster for practice-squad signee Jaret Patterson, who will add depth to the backfield behind Brian Robinson (knee) and Jonathan Williams. Gibson concludes the 2022 season with 546 rushing yards (on a career-worst 3.7 yards per carry) and three touchdowns to go with 46 catches for 353 yards and two more scores over his 15 appearances.
Gibson (knee/foot) didn't practice Wednesday, Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Washington reports.
What it means:
Gibson has been dealing with the foot injury for more than a month without missing a game, but the knee sprain he suffered Week 16 against San Francisco rendered him inactive for the Week 17 loss to Cleveland. Washington's elimination from playoff contention reduces the odds of Gibson returning for the season finale, though it's perhaps still possible if he returns to practice Thursday or Friday.
Commanders' Antonio Gibson (knee, foot) DNP on Wednesday
What it means:
Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson (knee, foot) did not practice on Wednesday ahead of Week 18's game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Gibson remained absent from practice to start the week on Wednesday after sitting out Week 17. Barring a return to practice on Thursday or Friday, Gibson appears to be headed toward missing Washington's final game of the season.
The Commanders are 5.5-point underdogs against Dallas in Week 18. Their implied team total of 18.0 points is the sixth-lowest team total on Sunday's main slate, according to numberFire's DFS Heat Map.
Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) ruled out for Washington's Week 17 matchup
What it means:
Washington Commanders Antonio Gibson (knee/foot) will not play in Week 17's game against the Cleveland Browns.
Gibson will be held out in Week 17 after he was unable to practice with knee and foot injuries. Expect Brian Robinson to see a feature role against a Browns' defense allowing 24.6 FanDuel points per game to running backs.
Robinson's projection includes 16.6 rushing attempts for 72.3 yards and 0.7 receptions for 4.5 yards.
